Forest Certification in Finland
Forest certification demonstrates that forests are managed responsibly and sustainably. The impacts of forest management are assessed from the perspectives of ecological, economic and social sustainability. Forest certification encompasses both forest management certification and chain of custody certification for timber traceability.
Finland uses two major forest certification systems: PEFC and FSC. PEFC accounts for over 90% of Finland's forest area, while FSC covers approximately 10% of our forests. FSC forest certification is typically implemented by joining a certification group. Properties can be included in both certification schemes simultaneously.
The certification requirements for PEFC have become stricter, and as a result, PEFC certification is now also required for all contractors who manage PEFC-certified forests. Entrepreneurs working in PEFC forests can be certified with a PEFC entrepreneur certificate. We also offer these entrepreneurs the opportunity to bring the properties they manage under PEFC certification.
When working on non-certified properties, timber must be traceable so that industrial facilities can purchase it. A CoC certificate demonstrates that timber comes from legal sources. Industry cannot purchase untraceable timber because it cannot be combined with PEFC and FSC certified products. The CoC certification system tracks timber flows entering and leaving a company.
